Doris Betts

Biography

Doris Betts was born June 4, 1932 in Pittsboro, North Carolina.  She was the only child of William Elmore and Mary Ellen Waugh.  In 1950, she graduated from Statesville High School.  She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1958 and 1965, Betts won the Sir Walter Raleigh award. In 1978 through 1981, she served as the Assistant Dean of the Honor Program at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  In 1994, Souls Raised from the Dead was on the New York Times list of top twenty best books. Doris Betts has also won the Southern Book Award.
